Researched Argument Review - Mental Health

Mental Health Awareness in Educational Institutions

Mental health is one of the most important things in life that we should pay more attention to. Especially students who are more vulnerable to get mental health problems. Mental health problems become a frightening specter recently because there are so many victims that are caused by mental illness. What is being told by the authors of those articles at references below are how important mental health awareness is among students in both school and college. As I know, students spend more time in the institutions to get education. It can be ensured that all educational institutions must pay attention to the mental health of their students.

The educational institutions such as elementary, junior and senior high schools; even universities have responsibility to their students. There are reports that many young-people around the world are suffering mental illness. According to the American College Health Association (ACHA)’s survey, 30% and 22% of students each displayed stress and anxiety cases. Attending university for the first time might become challenging for some students. They have to face their own problems when they are far away from families. Those can be overwhelmed to them, which they have to adapt with the new place, new schedules, and new friends. Controlling money and must have a good relationship in order to survive, also can serve as major sources of stress. Some research shows that many college students seek professional help. Different from the college students who can seek help, school children will show their behavioral changes to indicate their mental issues. They will become more sensitive and irritable with the common things. A few children will sign some physical symptoms such as frequent headaches or stomach-aches. However, the mental health problems still can be solved. For those who can already understand themselves, they will do time management to make things easier. They can choose which priorities they can handle. Besides consulting with a professional, maintaining our physical health will also help a lot. Eating regularly and exercise lightly or meditating can make our body feel more relaxed. Choosing a good circle of friends and trying to always think positive, can avoid or possibly solve mental problems. In addition, children who are still in school can also do things already mentioned. Nevertheless, schools must continue to help students overcome their problems. Teachers need to learn to detect the early signs of the mental issues so that they can directly help the student. Parents can also ask the teacher whether their children need professional help or not. The other way is schools can apply an individualized education program (IEP) or a 504 plan.

In my opinion, the aim of writing those articles is to emphasize how important it is to be more concerned about mental health and how to overcome the mental problems among students. Since many people still do not believe the importance of mental health awareness. Many of them assume that mental health is something that is taboo to talk about. People think a person with mental issues is a weak-man and should be avoided, whereas they really need help. Those articles are very important for us as ordinary people who are willing to study about mental health. I think the authors successfully elaborate their idea so that it can be understood by readers. The writings are coherent and well written; there is ample evidence to support the author's argument.

    1. Hello Brigita, thanks for asking me. As I mentioned above, school can develop an individualized education program (IEP) or a 504 plan. Those are some types of education program which provide guidance for teacher to treat their students who have unique needs. We can also spread awareness through comprehensive mental health socialization and have a fun learning process.

    1. Hi, Lydia! Thank you for visiting my blog. I will try to answer your questions based on what I have read before. According to Mayo Clinic, we can do some daily exercises, eat regularly, and get enough sleep to reduce anxiety and keep the mind positive. If our bodies are healthy and get enough rest, our mental health will also be maintained. Besides, no need to worry if we make a mistake, because we can fix it at a later time. Just be happy and enjoy your life!

    1. Hello, Arinaa! Thank you. I love your works too. :) Well, I think it depends on the school's condition. Whether the school has the ability to implement an appropriate system regarding mental health and is equipped with adequate infrastructure or not. Yet, I hope there are some schools that are willing to implement the mental health lessons and will run effectively there.

    1. Hello again, Jihan! Well, I will explain furthermore. In supporting mental health awareness in school, teachers can help students' parents to detect the early sign of mental illness. They also can tell the parents about the unusual children's behavior, so parents can decide what they should do to help their child. Thank you. :)
