Gantumoote Movie Review: Life-related movie you must watch!
Gantumoote is a movie directed and written by Roopa Rao. A story about an innocent girl love story, first love, bullying, and academic pressure. A wonderful movie delivered the plot perfectly by using a background of the 90s as a flashback of a girl life story. You will feel the atmosphere of the good old school days and may bring your memories by seeing the stuff that usually found in around 80s-90s are used well done in this movie.
The movie shows the life journey of Meera who is dealing with herself when she was 16 years old. She experienced many issues in life such as academic pressure from her parents. She also got bullying in her school days while she was a high schooler. Yet, she keeps going until she falls in love with a boy, Madhu. The love story between the two teenagers is related to real life, although it is just puppy love. How they face many problems in relation to the school days were shown such a simple act.

The movie begins with the scene of Meera reminiscing about her past while she wrote her diary on the hill. In the first a little Meera, who likes watching movies so badly, appears in a cinema. She sneaks out of her house to watch a movie alone. Meera enjoys the movie she likes until a man comes beside her and slides his hand up her thigh rudely. Although she is not old enough, she knows that she just got an inappropriate treatment from a stranger. She decided to leave the cinema with a heavy heart. Because of her desire to continue watching the movie, she decided to be back but watch in a different section. She chose to go to the 2nd floor and watch there. Here Meera represents feminism indirectly. She persisted in desire even though she just got the bad experience. In addition she also showed that she can get what she wants even though other people belittle her. Just like in her school life, her friend bet her boyfriend that she can’t be a winner of a speech competition in their school.
Meera is an innocent and brave girl who is also a class topper, no wonder if everyone loves her. As a movie lover, she idolized Salman Khan who is an Indian top actor. One day she feels one of her classmates kinda looks like Salman Khan, he is Madhu. She feels that she sees Salman in Madhu. She fell in love. Madhu notices it and tries to get close with Meera. Shortly, they attached to each other. They do everything together as well as lovers do. Meera into Madhu so much, she is willing to do everything as long as he is beside her. Until one day, Meera dares to skip the class and mischief to go to a cinema by following her friends, including Madhu. They are still using a uniform and couples while watching a movie. There Meera and Madhu kiss. The next day, Meera gets bullied because she and Madhu kissed. Her friends called her ‘Dagar’ which means slut. There is someone who hates and accuses her bad things. Turns out it was Saji whose love is rejected by Meera. She hurt so bad when she heard Saji called her as slut. Here, she shows us how strong women are against the bad news or gossip that refers to us. Meera is against bullying by herself that she can prove it was wrong. This also shows that patriarchy still exists around women’s life.

During Meera's love story, she faces many problems that also refer to her academics. Her teacher wants Meera to focus more on the exam, considering she is about to graduate. Madhu who doesn't care about it wants Meera to stay with him and do romance things as usual. Meanwhile, Meera keeps going and focuses on her academics but still loves Madhu. Here I think Madhu is a patriarchy person because he doesn’t want Meera to get a good score nor did he make the effort to study. As well as when he isn't willing to help her against bullying. He ends with he didn’t passing the exam. Madhu didn’t accept when his whole friends were going to college while he had to retake the examination. I also think when he got mad at Meera, he assumed that all happened because of Meera. He thought his life better when she didn’t come to his life.
Director Roopa also wants to deliver an issue of academic pressure. Meera’s parents want her to be focused on her academics, they don’t care about her daughter's happiness. Even her mom hates when Meera loves watching movies or is collecting her idol’s photo, Salman Khan. This also happens in Madhu‘s life. After he could never pass the examination he became frustrated. He always remembers their principal that always said “If you get the first class, you get the first class life. If you get second class, second class life.” It drives him to think that he is useless. It also directs to his thought that all his life was ruined, moreover his parents didn’t support him at all. It’s very regrettable when he ended up with suicide. Actually it can be avoided by the support from the loved ones. The loved ones should be the biggest supporters to every person that feels they are useless.

Technically, the movie successfully delivered the moral value simply and beautifully without negating the Indian cultures. The scenes, the dialogues, the characters, all look so natural and the issues are very related to our life. The actors' acting is outstanding and naturally shows their feelings. The scene that took the 90s as a background should be appreciated. The director managed this epically while there are so many advanced technologies that can make the movie artificially. This movie also proves that language is never a barrier. At the end, this is such a nice and well scripted movie that you must watch.
